About Southampton, Ontario
Although
we're serious about making art, we also believe in combining art with
fun. Southampton - the oldest port on the Bruce Peninsula -- offers both.
The town grew from an Indian settlement where the Saugeen River empties into Lake Huron into a fishing village, then a lumbering and railway centre. There are lanes lined with enchanting 19th-century cottages, grand homes built by lumber and railway barons; miles of clean sand beaches; the Chantry Island Imperial Lighthouse offshore; elderly fishing boats -- and an abundance of colour filled gardens, parks, and rolling farmland. There's plenty of affordable accommodation, too -- at B&Bs, cottages, motels, campgrounds, and inns. Activities range from swimming lessons at the Long Dock, kayak and sailboard instruction, golf at several courses, tennis on 13 courts - to bingo, dinner theatre, dances, craft shows at the Coliseum, canoeing the Saugeen River, history at the Bruce County Museum (one of the province's best), concerts at Fairy Lake, sampling native culture at the annual First Nations powwow - and watching Southampton's famous sunsets.
You can shop in our stores and boutiques, sample local cooking -- fish
and chips on the beach, Bruce County's famous beef, and gourmet fare in
the former train station. There are Canada Day fireworks on the beach,
a fish fry by Lake Huron's biggest flag, a lobsterfest, Thursdays' antique
car displays on High Street, summer theatre - in short, something for
everyone.
