peyote stitch bracelet / wirey necklace

Wirey necklaces and peyote stitch bracelets are the projects for the day. The wirey necklace is made of “artistic wire” and a great assortment of beads and charms. This collar is a very popular project and is as much fun to make as it is to wear. The peyote stitch bracelet is an off-loom project that is done with a needle and thread using fabulous Japanese beads and a magnet clasp. Though not required for this class some beading experience is an asset. Bead kits will supply you with all you need for the day.

paper sculpture and collage

New Class

Work with a variety of papers, including rice, mulberry, washi, and watercolour papers in a non-traditional way to create two-and three dimensional works of art.  Explore colour, texture, patterning, design and the physical properties of paper and its relationship to other media such as paint, wax resist, and a variety of drawing materials.  You will tear, weave, fold and dip in dye, wrap, layer, stamp, paint, make marks, and continue to experiment with your supplies. Experiment with collage, assemblage, fibre techniques on paper, and learn 30 ways to manipulate paper.  This is a very exciting and rich experimental mixed media class for beginners and experienced artists.  There will be $40 material fee payable to the instructor.

the art of collage

Collage, combined with various other mediums, is an excellent way to develop spontaneity, build artistic confidence - and have fun! You will be fascinated with the tactile process of creating collage art by emphasizing colour, design and texture.  We will focus on developing your personal visual language, and producing a unified body of work - with one-on-one encouragement and guidance as your work progresses.  This workshop is suitable for all levels. Learn the ancient art of wire wrapping in this fun workshop. You will complete several projects, that will take you from beginner to intermediate, using copper wire and gemstone beads and cabs with the exception of the last project which will be made in tarnish resistant Sterling Silver. All necessary tools will be provided.

spontaneous explorations with mixed media

This intermediate level course is planned to stretch your painterly perception.  Combine your imagination with other mediums to create spontaneous, impressionistic paintings with rich, textured surfaces.!  Using a variety of materials  participants will learn how to use negative shapes and bold colour.  Explore a variety of exercises to improve your design skills and your powers of observation.  Materials list provided.

water soluable oils: technique, colour and texture

NEW CLASS

Get excited with color and form at this intensive technique, color and texture workshop.  Brush techniques, color considerations for the spring and summer landscape, and layering and glazing to create surface subtleties using brush and palette knife will be demonstrated, demystified and put to work.   We will paint outdoors (weather permitting) and in the studio from life, and from photo references. Demonstrations, personal instruction, and critiques are the format for each day.  Participants are encouraged to bring photographs for reference and any still life objects of personal interest.  Course is designed for all levels of experience. Using various materials, an armature will be developed and coated with a textile hardener called Paverpol that will make your garden sculpture weather resistant. Make your garden the topic of conversation with a unique sculpture designed by you. Material list will be provided.

negative painting in watercolour

Negative painting – painting the space between forms -- is both the joy and the bane of any watercolourist. Through a series of introductory practice pieces Nan will teach you the secrets of negative painting and the necessary skills to complete a woodland scene and a floral or two. This class is for painters with some experience with watercolour. Materials list provided.

poured watercolour
Instructor: Lin Souliere Date(s): June 14 to Jun 18

Creating the essence of light in your watercolours can add magic and drama to your paintings. Lin will share examples of her poured watercolours and talk about how to achieve a glow using the pouring method. You will work alongside Lin as she shows you how to become brave and take chances with your watercolour. Participants should also bring their own reference material as we will be able to work on a number of paintings during the week. We will also learn how to incorporate pen and ink with poured watercolour. Some previous experience with watercolour is a prerequisite. Suitable for Intermediate to Advanced levels.
